INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: 2012  Helped the U.S. Men's Junior Team win the NORCECA Continental Championship and qualify for the 2013 FIVB World Championship in Colorado Springs. 2011 – Played on the Boy’s Youth National Team  that competed in the Under-19 Pan American Cup in Mexicali, Mexico (Bronze)… Matt was named best setter on the team and second-best setter in the tournament with 57 assists. 2010 – Played on the Boy’s Youth National Team that finished second to Cuba at the NORCECA Championship in Guadalajara, Mexico.

CLUB/PREP HIGHLIGHTS: Was named the 2007, 2009 and 2010 Most Valuable Player for Space Needle VBF… Named  the 2010 Most Valuable Player of the Emerald City Classic and selected to the All-Tournament Team…Volleyball Magazine “Fab 50” selection… Earned Most Valuable Player at the Emerald City Classic in 2009…Named the 2009 Alki King of the Beach …Space Needle VBF Coaches Award and MVP in 2008…Space Needle VBF Most Inspiration Player in 2006.

COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS: Matt plays for Pepperdine University, and saw action in 118 sets his freshman season….Chalked up 1343 assists with an average of 11.38 assists per set….Added 76 block assists for an average of .69 blocks per set…Also tallied 166 digs with an average of 1.41 digs per set.

PERSONAL: Born Matthew “Matt” Alvaro West (1993) in Seattle, Wash. … Parents are Mark and Raquel West… Matt’s mother played for the Peruvian National Volleyball Team at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow among many other international tournaments…In 1995, she was recognized by the Peruvian Sports Foundation as one of the best sportswomen in Peru… Matt’s father played volleyball at George Williams College in Downers Grove, Ill… Both parents are volleyball coaches… Matt has a grandfather and several cousins who play or have played professional soccer in Peru… Matt is currently studying sports administration and marketing at Pepperdine University…Matt started playing organized indoor volleyball in 2005 for the Space Needle Volleyball Foundation… He played beach volleyball for two years with partner Max Ozuna… Favorite food is Rib-eye steak… Favorite book is How Good Do You Want to Be?… Favorite professional team is the Sacramento Kings… Favorite athlete is Kevin Durant… Favorite musical artist is Jim Croce… His hobbies include hanging out with friends, eating and enjoying life… Favorite movie is The Imposter and favorite actor is Denzel Washington… Matt admires Adrian Peterson because he “tore his ACL, rehabbed properly and took exceptional care of himself, both physically and mentally. That intense care inevitably led him to be 7 yards away from breaking the all-time (rushing) yards season record.”  He also admires Michael Jordan because “he is a winner, the greatest basketball player of all time and a phenomenal competitor.”… Matt says that the happiest moment in his life is right now because that is all that matters.
