After Mammoth was over I got in my truck and rushed home to my wife at home in Tahoe as fast as I could. I really needed a day to reset and get prepared for X Games and, after that, the Olympic Winter Games. I will take a day at home whenever I can get it. Laundry, cleaning, packing and visiting with friends is what my day consisted of and before I knew it, it was 4 a.m. and I was scrambling to the airport with wifey. Crazy hectic are the only two words I can describe that morning. Oh well, at least we were heading to the best event of the year: X Games.
Even though we barely made our flight in time the rest of the day went really smooth and we capped it off by checking into our 100-year-old house. Let me tell you this place had some character. From a washer and dryer right in the kitchen to wallpaper on the ceilings — this place was hilarious. Whatever. It was a place to rest my head and for that I was grateful.
The next morning was the first day of practice and I was so excited. Just being at the venue at X Games gets you stoked. This event is just on another level. I am proud to know the team that puts it all together. Props, SPT, you guys are badass. The course was so on point and I can guarantee you it’s the best one of the year. The jumps are so perfect and the set apart the rookies from the veterans because it is really technical. The first practice day went awesome and the next day was not so awesome, but I kept it positive. Positive thinking can do a lot for your riding even if you have a bad day.
Semifinals were insane. I was stoked to land my first run and post my first ever 90 at X Games Aspen. The level was insane and we even saw some triple corks. I ended up qualifying fourth and I was pretty stoked. To add a new trick to my run and stomp both of my runs was all a man could ask for. I knew I had to get ready for finals so later that night I hit the big air jump and worked on my triple corks. Just got to prepare.
On Friday I had one of the best days of my life. My wife and I went to the doctor’s office and got a 3D ultrasound of our new baby! We are 19 weeks pregnant and we were able to find out that we are having a baby boy. Wow, my life is going to change and I feel so blessed.
As if life could not get any better, on Saturday it was finals time. I was prepared with a run I knew could do really well and that is a feeling I have been missing for a year or so. I was armed with my new switch backside double and also my backside triple cork. I had three runs to put it down. I was so in the zone and let me tell you it’s the best feeling. I put down my first run and stomped my first-ever triple cork in a contest. I landed a small score because I hand dragged on one of my other jumps but either way I showed the industry that I have stepped up my riding and I am ready to contend again. The next two runs were great but I failed to land my triple on the last jump. Oh well I ended up getting my third 5th place at X and missed the podium. I still feel incredibly blessed to be having a new child and to feel like I can win again. On to the next. The Olympics!!!
