Sept. 06, 2008, 12:47 p.m. (ET)

BEIJING, China - The U.S. Paralympic Track Cycling Team will start the 2008 Paralympic Games on Sunday, September 7 just a few hours after the Opening Ceremony ends. After several days of practicing at Laoshan Velodrome, Beijing, China, Coach Craig Griffin (Colorado Springs, Colo.) feels they are ready.

"The training since being here has been really encouraging and we had a very good practice today," said Griffin. "I believe all of the cyclists will have personal bests in tomorrow's races."

The squad includes two returning from the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece and five athletes competing in their first Paralympic Track Cycling competition.
This will mark Barbara Buchan's (CP3/Bend, Ore.) fifth Paralympic Games and Karissa Whitsell (B&VI/ Eugene, Ore.) will be entering her third Paralympic Games with new pilot Mackenzie Woodring (Grand Rapids, Mich.).

Also on the team is Mike Farrell (CP4/Colorado Springs, Colo.), Anthony Zahn (LC4/Riverside, Calif.), Greta Neimanas (LC1/Colorado Springs, Colo.), Jennifer Schuble (LC4/Homewood, Ala.), and Allison Jones (LC3/Denver, Colo.).

Farrell will be the first to compete in the qualification round of the Men's CP4 Individual Pursuit. In the afternoon session, Zahn will compete in the Men's LC 3/LC 4 1 Km Time Trial, followed immediately by Whitsell and Woodring competing in the Women's B&VI 1-3 1 Km Time Trial. Just as he began the day, Farrell will also conclude the day with his final in the Men's CP4 Individual Pursuit.

The track cycling team will compete in ten different events during the Beijing Games. Track cycling will conclude on Wednesday, September 10, 2008. Road cycling will then begin on Friday, September 12. The entire track team will also be competing in the road race events.
