Marines remain undefeated in sitting volleyball at Warrior Games
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Marines and British Armed Forces teams entered Wednesday undefeated in sitting volleyball at the 2012 Warrior Games presented by Deloitte.
Both teams boasted a 2-0 record and faced off Tuesday night at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. In a tight first set between the two Wednesday, the Marines pulled away with the 25-21 victory and took the overall match with a 25-18 win in second set.
The Marines also survived another close first set against SOCOM, 26-24, and rolled on to take the second set, 25-13. With both victories that night, the Marines (4-0) are the only team with an unblemished record in sitting volleyball.
“Air Force was tipping over, and we had to make some adjustments,” Marine Corporal Dylan Kelly said. “The second set, we already knew pretty much how they played, who their strong players were, and we adjusted to that.”
“I’m honored to be out here, to play with the elite group among all the services competing; it’s just humbling,” Kelly added.
For the second night in a row, the UK have been the only team to force three sets. After defeating Air Force, 2-1, Tuesday night, the UK took Army into a third set on Wednesday but fell, 25-17, 12-25, 15-10.
The loss to Army and Marines drop the UK to 2-2, and improves Army to 3-1. Army also defeated SOCOM earlier on Wednesday, 25-16, 26-24.
“They’re a really good team, probably one of the best out there,” Army veteran Damion Peyton said of the British Armed Forces team.
Sitting volleyball continues on Thursday at the Air Force Academy, with the bronze medal game to take place.
“Warrior Games is a chance to come out of injury and step behind that shell of all the doctors and al that medical stuff, just come out and compete,” Peyton said. “It’s coming back to being a soldier, bringing you back to having a mission and completing that mission.
