Ben Lee Selected as Badminton Coach for 2012 U.S. Olympic Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – With six months to go to the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, USA Badminton announces the selection of Ben Lee (San Jose, Calif.) to serve as the Coach for the 2012 United States Olympic Badminton Team.  The 2012 Olympic Games will be held in London, England, July 27th to August 12th with badminton competition scheduled for July 28th to August 5th in London’s famed Wembley Arena.

The current Head Coach at the California Badminton Academy, Lee was women’s team Coach for the 2011 United States Pan American Games Team that competed in Guadalajara, Mexico in October 2011.  At the 2011 Pan American Games, Lee coached the U.S. women to four medals (two silver and two bronze) and assisted the overall team to a total of six medals (one gold, three silver and two bronze).

Lee achieved many accomplishments as an internationally competitive badminton athlete, most notably representing the United States of America as a member of the first ever U.S. Olympic Badminton Team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, the first Olympic Games in which badminton was a contested sport.  Lee’s leadership ability was recognizable even then as he was selected as the Team’s Captain.  Lee began his coaching career in 1994 coaching grass roots and developmental players while still actively competing himself.

A 1989 graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology with an emphasis on sports training; Lee has developed numerous badminton clubs while also forging a successful career on the police force.  Besides the numerous athletes he has coached, Lee co-founded and served as head coach for both the Golden Gate Badminton Club (now Royal Badminton Academy) and the Bay Badminton Center.

The 2012 U.S. Olympic Team for Badminton will be determined at the conclusion of the Badminton World Federation’s Olympic Qualification season for the 2012 Olympic Games which began on May 1, 2011 and will run through April 30, 2012.  Participation in the Olympic Games is solely determined by an athlete’s international ranking.  Five badminton events will be contested at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England; men’s doubles, women’s doubles, men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles.

All nominations to the 2012 United States Olympic Team are pending final approval by the Chief Executive Officer of the United States Olympic Committee.
