Kelly and Bernstein sixth in La Plagne’s women’s bobsled European Cup race

LA PLAGNE, France (Dec. 8, 2012)- Katelyn Kelly (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Ida Bernstein (Cockeysville, Md.) ventured to La Plagne, France to compete as the sole U.S. team entered into the women’s bobsled European Cup.  Kelly and Bernstein learned the course this week under the guidance of the British team, and finished sixth in today’s race.

“Ida and I somehow made it from Igls to La Plagne in a huge truck carrying a bobsled without a working GPS and no tire chains,” Kelly said.  “I am really proud of everything we’ve done this week with just the two of us.”

Kelly and Bernstein clocked start times of 7.06 and 7.03 seconds for runs of 1:03.20 and 1:03.10, respectively.  The top six teams were awarded medals, so Kelly and Bernstein collected hardware for Team USA with a total time of 2:06.30.

“I absolutely love this track and cannot wait to come back again,” Kelly said.  “It’s really fun and in an absolutely beautiful location.”

Stefanie Szczurek and Erline Nolte from Germany were victorious with a combined time of 2:03.64.  Miriam Wagner and Franziska Fritz trailed their teammates by 0.33 seconds to claim silver, while Ekatrina Kostromina and Ludmila Udobkina from Russia were third with a two-run total of 2:04.64.

Kelly will return to Igls, Austria for Junior World Championships, which take place before the holiday break from Dec. 20-22.

“I’m looking forward to my next adventure in Austria for the Junior World Championships, and wish the World Cup team the best here next week,” Kelly said.  “Be ready for snow.”
