Lake Placid hosts America’s Cup finale this week

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (March 26, 2012)-The 2011-2012 competitive season will conclude this weekend with the America’s Cup finale in Lake Placid, N.Y.  Official training began at the Olympic Sports Complex today, and athletes will vie for the season title in competitions held from Thursday through Sunday on the 2012 World Championship track.  The U.S. team raced to its most successful World Championship results in history in Lake Placid last month by claiming five medals, four of them gold.

The skeleton races will take place at 9 a.m. on both Thursday and Friday. Men’s two-man and women’s bobsled will race at 1 p.m. on Friday and again at 9 a.m. on Saturday.  Men’s four-man bobsled teams take to the ice at noon on Saturday before wrapping up the season at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Temperatures soared above 80 degrees during last week’s international driving school, but winter has since returned to the Adirondacks with below freezing temperatures and even a dusting of snow. Fans are encouraged to attend the events to cheer on a mixed U.S. team of veterans and rookies as they battle athletes from around the world for gold.   Tickets are $8 for adults or $6 for juniors and seniors, and can be purchased in advance by calling (518) 523-4436 or at the gate on the day of competition.
