Daly moves up seven spots in final run to tie for 11th

Koenigssee, Germany (Jan. 12, 2013)-The U.S. men’s skeleton team struggled in this morning’s Koenigssee World Cup race.  John Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) led the team in 11th after a quicker second run pulled him up the order.

“John is fighting back and is starting to turn things around,” said U.S. skeleton head coach Tuffy Latour.  “The name of the game is world championships, and our guys have been testing different equipment setups to find what will work best.  Today was a good race for these guys.”

Daly struggled in the first run and was at risk of not qualifying for the final, but was 0.13 seconds ahead of the cut in 18th.  Daly nailed his second run and moved up seven spots to tie for 11th with a combined time of 1:44.49.  Daly’s best finish in Koenigssee prior to today was 17th.

Martins Dukurs from Latvia won his sixth race of the season with a two-run total of 1:42.07.  German Frank Rommel was 0.47 seconds behind to earn silver, while “Russian Rocket” Alexander Tretiakov was third with a total time of 1:42.77.

Matt Antoine (Prairie du Chien, Wisc.) returned to the World Cup this week after electing to extend his holiday break to get additional rehabilitation on his knee, which was operated on over the summer.  Antoine made a calculated hit in the combination of corners named the “snake pit,” but his sled fishtailed and he lost speed down the course.  Antoine finished 17th with a two-run total of 1:45.10.

Kyle Tress (Ewing, N.J.) was just hundredths of a second shy of qualifying for the final run after crossing the finish in 52.70 seconds for 21st.

Racing continues in Koenigssee with the two-man bobsled competition at 1:30 pm local time. Check your local listings to watch coverage of the events on Universal Sports, or visit www.universalsports.com for race highlights.
