USA Boxing to Host Back to Basics Training Camp
USA Boxing will host the second Back to Basics Training Camp with 12 of the country's elite boxers, April 12-19 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Back to Basics camps are a new element of USA Boxing's elite athlete program under High Performance Director Patrick Borkowski.
The 12 boxers participating in the camp will be 2008 Future Stars National Champion Louie Byrd (Denver, Colo.), 2008 U.S. Olympic team flyweight training partner Bruno Escalante (Waimanalo, Hawaii), two-time Olympian and 2007 World Champion Rau'shee Warren (Cincinnati, Ohio), 2008 Future Stars National Championships bantamweight bronze medalist Roman Morales (San Ardo, Calif.); 2008 Olympian Raynell Williams (Cleveland, Ohio); 2008 Future Stars National Championships light welterweight bronze medalist Jared Robinson (Sumter, S.C.); light welterweight Jamal James (Minneapolis, Minn.); 2008 Futures Stars National Champion Dorian Anthony (Lynwood, Calif.); 2008 Olympic team heavyweight training partner David Carey (Anchorage, Alaska); 2008 Future Stars National Championships silver medalist Michael Bissett (Smyrna, Tenn.), heavyweight Tavon Sol (Baltimore, Md.); and U.S. Olympic Team Trials super heavyweight champion Michael Hunter (Las Vegas, Nev.).
The coaches leading the training camp in conjunction with Borkowski will be 2004 Olympic Assistant Coach Joe Zanders (Long Beach, Calif.), U.S. Marine Corps Head Coach Ron Simms (Camp Lejeune, N.C.), and 2003 Pan American Games Assistant Coach Barry Hunter (Fort Washington, Md.)
All of the camp participants will arrive in Colorado Springs on Sunday, April 12 before opening a full day of training on Monday. The athletes will take part in targeted boxing practices, strength and conditioning sessions, nutrition and USADA education classes as well as situational sparring before departing from Colorado Springs on Sunday, April 19.
