USA teams eliminated from playoff contention at 2014 World Junior Championships in Switzerland
(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - The playoff field at the 2014 World Junior Championships will not feature an American team as the round robin winds down in Flims, Switzerland.
U.S. teams led by Cory Christensen (Duluth, Minn.) and Jake Vukich (Seattle) lost their round robin games today to fall out of playoff contention at Waldhaus Arena.
Vukich (Seattle) and teammates Evan McAuley (Sammamish, Wash.), Luc Violette (Granite Falls, Wash.), Kyle Lorvick (Seattle), and Alex Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) fell to Canada, 8-1, to slip to 2-5 in the round robin standings with one game left to play.
"The hardest game you will ever have to play is a game you have nothing to play for," said McAuley. "We were eliminated from playoffs following our game against Norway last night - we had a couple of heartbreakers yesterday so it's just so hard to come out with that same kind of intensity compared to when you're actually playing for something. We got up this morning and were like 'we have no chance for playoffs,' but you've got to put your best foot forward - it's very hard."
Christensen and teammates Mackenzie Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.), Anna Bauman (Duluth, Minn.), Anna Hopkins (Bismarck, N.D.), and Tina Persinger (Fairbanks, Alaska) fell to Sweden, 9-3, this morning and are now 4-4 in the standings.
"It wasn't our best game, but we're still going to play our hearts out in the next game and see where we end up," Bauman said. "There were some missed sweeping calls on my part and a couple of other ones. We just didn't shoot as well as the other team."
The game was tied 3-3 after six ends but Sweden scored four points late that turned the game in their favor.
"The score of four points was the turning point," Bauman said. "We were heavy with a couple of draws and our rock placement wasn't perfect and they took advantage of it and made their shots - that's how they scored four. It can happen though and that's why we kept playing. We've got another tough game against Russia tonight but we're looking forward to it and hope to finish off the round robin with a win."
