Aug 05 U.S. Olympic Team for Women's Field Hockey Holds Second Practice

Aug. 05, 2008, 1:18 p.m. (ET)
BEIJING, CHINA (August 5, 2008) - The U.S. Olympic Team for Women's Field Hockey held their second practice Tuesday at the Olympic Green Hockey Stadium.

"Practice went really well," said Carrie Lingo. "We're just getting used to the turf. Ran around, worked on some basic skills. We're ready to go."

Lingo, a midfielder from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, has 143 international appearances, second behind team captain Kate Barber's 209.

The team barely settled in to the Olympic village on Sunday evening, and has already completed two full practices. Lingo doesn't think much transition time will be necessary.

"I think everyone pretty much switched right on to the Beijing schedule," Lingo said. The team met with a sleep coach last month for advice on successfully managing the jet lag.

In May, Lingo tested a filtration mask for the team in preparation for potentially adverse air conditions in Beijing. Trials included completing entire training sessions wearing the mask, which covered the mouth and nose. So far, she hasn't felt a need to wear it. "The smog factor hasn't been an issue at all," she said.

Tuesday's practice wrapped up at noon, in the midst of hazy afternoon heat. Lingo said the team was undaunted.

"We were ready for the heat," she said. "People said it was really hot, but when we arrived, we all thought, ‘This isn't really that hot'. It was a nice surprise."

The U.S. Olympic Team for Women's Field Hockey practices tomorrow from 9:30am to 10:00 am at the Olympic Sports Center Hockey Stadium, and daily through the start of Olympic Games competition. On Thursday, August 7, the U.S. will hold a practice match with Korea at the Olympic Sports Center Hockey Stadium at 7:30 pm. Players and coaches will be available for interview following practice.

The U.S. Olympic Team opens Olympic Games competition on Sunday, August 10 against 2007 Pan American champions Argentina. The United States is slotted in Pool B with Argentina, Germany, Great Britain, Japan and New Zealand.
