Feb 13 USA Defeat Germany to Finish Third

MENDOZA, ARGENTINA – USA defeated Germany this evening to finish third in the Four Nations Tournament in Mendoza, Argentina. 

“It was a great opportunity to play in a game that had the intensity of a final, against quality opposition,” said Lee Bodimeade, Head Coach. “The bonus of playing extra time and going into penalties to decide the game will provide valuable experience to our young team as we go forward. Obviously winning a game against the No. 3 ranked team in the world adds confidence.”

 Germany scored the first goal of the match in the twenty-second minute. Jackie Kintzer (Chapel Hill, NC) had a solid first half in goal, to keep USA only down by one entering the second half.
USA’s Paige Selenski (Charlottesville, Pa) scored first in the second half to make the score tied 1-1. Germany quickly answered back, adding a second goal of the match to lead USA 2-1. USA put pressure on Germany immediately and was quickly able tie the match 2-2, when Torrie Albini (Escondido, CA) redirected a pass into the net. Both teams traded penalty corner scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize, sending the match into overtime.
USA and Germany battled two fifteen minute scoreless overtimes before heading into strokes. Kayla Bashore (Shoemakersville, Pa), Caroline Nichols (Virginia Beach, VA) and Maren Ford (Ann Arbor, MI) were able to convert their strokes into goals. USA was victorious over Germany, 3-2.
USA will travel to Rosario, Argentina on Monday, February 14 for a second Four Nations Tournament, February 16-20.

The schedule for the four game series in Rosario, Argentina is as follows with all times to be determined.
