RICHMOND, VIRGINIA – The first weekend of the 2011 National Indoor Tournament presented by Yolo Sportswear opened this afternoon at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, Virginia. Under-19 Girls and Under-20 Boys divisions will compete in seven matches over the next three days. An estimated 1,300 athletes and families have flocked to the Richmond area for this tournament and will fill hotels, restaurants and shopping centers throughout the weekend.
“The Convention Center has hosted qualifiers to get to the Indoor Tournament in the past,” said Amanda Welcomer, Director of Event Services at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. “It is great to see the National Indoor Tournament being held here on a much larger scale. I anticipate a really great weekend and we look forward to making this a fun and safe experience for everyone here.”
Hundreds of athletes began to fill the Convention Center at 1:00pm today, with the first match starting at 2:00pm. Teams camped out in the hallways between matches and shopped in the vending lobby. Included in the crowd of spectators were college coaches looking for the top talent for potential recruiting opportunities to their programs. Women’s National Team member and 2008 Olympian Keli Smith was present signing autographs and posing for pictures. Smith will be at the Tournament periodically throughout the weekend for additional signings.
“This is the largest National Indoor Tournament since it originated,” said Karen Collins, Director of Event Logistics at USA Field Hockey. “With an additional one hundred teams attending this year, the economic impact on both Richmond and Virginia Beach will be significantly greater than it has in the past. Opening day today was fantastic and we look forward to an exciting next two days as well as next weekend’s event in Virginia Beach.”
