Canada hosts U.S. Women's Field Hockey Team
The U.S. Women’s Field Hockey Team will take on Canada, May 19-23, in Victoria, British Columbia
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – With under 80 days to go to the start of the Olympic Games in London, head coach Lee Bodimeade says Team USA’s preparations are very much on track.
The U.S. Women’s Field Hockey Team will take on Canada in a four-game test series, May 19-23, in Victoria, British Columbia. The series marks the beginning of Canada’s campaign toward the 2016 Olympic Games. For the U.S., the series wraps up months of preparation that started last December for the 2012 Olympic Games.
“The Canadian series is part of our final preparations for the Games,” said Bodimeade. “We are happy where we currently are and are looking forward to competing against Canada and continuing to work on areas we identified from the Australia and New Zealand tour.”
The 18-woman squad set to travel to Vancouver was selected by Bodimeade last Friday. The squad is nearly identical to the Pan American Team that upset No. 1 Argentina in the final of the Pan American Games last October.
This will be the first time the U.S. has faced Canada since defeating them in the semi-finals of the Pan American Games, 4-2. Canada’s 2012 Olympic dreams came to end after finishing fifth at the Olympic Qualifier in New Delhi, India in February.
Bodimeade expects Team USA to do very well against the Canadians, but is more concerned about being successful in areas that were identified following a disappointing result at the 4-Nations Tournament in New Zealand last month.
The final stage of preparation for the U.S. will come in late June against their Pan American rivals. Team USA will host Argentina, June 18-23, on a multi-stop, four-game test series in Virginia. This will be the last series before Team USA departs for London.
Bodimeade will announce the 2012 U.S. Olympic Women’s Field Hockey Team, subject to approval from the United States Olympic Committee board of directors, on June 23. That evening, a formal celebration will take place at the Virginia Beach Convention Center to recognize the Olympic Team. Tickets to the event can be purchased on usafieldhockey.com.
The following athletes have been selected to compete for Team USA: Michelle Cesan (New Vernon, NJ), Lauren Crandall (Doylestown, PA), Rachel Dawson (Berlin, NJ), Katelyn Falgowski (Landenberg, Pa), Jesse Gey (Green Lane, Pa), Melissa Gonzalez (Mohegan Lake, NY), Michelle Kasold (Chapel Hill, NC), Jaclyn Kintzer (Robesonia, Pa), Maren Langford (Ann Arbor, MI), Claire Laubach (Centreville, VA), Caroline Nichols (Virginia Beach, VA), Katie O’Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa), Julia Reinprecht (Perkasie, Pa), Katie Reinprecht (Perkasie, Pa), Paige Selenski (Shavertown, PA), Amy Swensen (Grantville, Pa), Shannon Taylor (Midlothian, VA), Michelle Vittese (Woodbury, NJ)
