CHULA VISTA, Cali. – U.S. Men’s National Team Head Coach Chris Clements has confirmed the eighteen players that will compete in the International Hockey Federation World League Round 1 tournament at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Cali., November 16-18.
“We have a core group of very experienced players, including Pat Harris, Jon Ginolfi, Kevin Barber, Ian Scally, Will Holt and Arjan Reyatt who will provide guidance and leadership for the very talented youngsters who have been rewarded for their very promising year with the Junior Squad,” said Clements.
The eighteen athletes were selected based on their performances over the past two weeks at inter-squad competitions and training sessions. The squad is an equal combination of rookies and veterans who intend to secure the U.S. a spot at World League Round 2 in February 2013.
“The veterans will provide an example for the younger players to follow on and off the field and will be very supportive of the enthusiasm, energy and talent they will bring to the squad,” said Clements. “The younger players are excited for their first opportunity to represent their country with the Senior Squad and I am confident they will excel.”
Asavir Singh Kalla, a defender from Cupertino, Cali. will have the opportunity to earn his first international cap with the Senior Squad. Kalla is a current member of the U.S. Men’s Development Squad who has been selected to participate in this tournament.
Ian Scally (Thousand Oaks, CA) is the most capped veteran on the squad and is close to reaching the 100 cap milestone with 92 international competitions under his belt.
The U.S. will take on Guatemala on Saturday and Mexico on Sunday. While Guatemala is a new opponent joining the Pan American league and international hockey circuit, the U.S. faced Mexico at the XVI Pan American Games last October and had a split result, losing to the host nation in the preliminary rounds, but coming back and defeating them to finish fifth overall in the tournament.
“We have a vision of keeping this group together for many years and are excited for our potential to develop and perform on the international stage. The players are very excited for the opportunity to represent their country and host an international event at home in front of their friends and family,” said Clements.
