IJF World Tour

Athlete Selection Procedures

Athletes ranked as a B-Level or higher in each of the IJF Olympic weight divisions on the USA Judo Senior Elite National Roster as of December 1, 2012 or who are the 2012 Senior National Champion in the division in which they are seeking to compete will be eligible to compete on the first leg of the 2013 World Tour.

The first leg of the Tour will begin with the Continental Open in Sofia, Bulgaria for Women and Tbilisi, Georgia for men and will conclude with the Grand Prix in Samsun, Turkey (Men & Women) (March 30-31). All eligible athletes are listed on a roster on this page which will be updated throughout the year.

An athlete only may choose to compete in a weight division in which he or she is ranked.

For example, a #1 ranked athlete in the 81kg division may sign up for World Tour competitions in the 81kg division. If this athlete has another ranking in another weight division and would prefer to compete in that division, he / she must wait until the appropriate corresponding deadline for his / her ranking in the division in which he / she would like to compete.

FIRST SELECTION PERIOD: December 19, 2012

Only athletes who are ranked as a Senior B-Level athlete on the aforementioned roster OR who are the current USA Judo Senior National Champion may request to compete in a Continental Open, Grand Slam, or Grand Prix event during the first period of selection.

NEW: In order to expedite the process of selection, each athlete may submit a total of SIX tournaments in which he or she would like to compete by 5 p.m. Mountain Time on December 19, 2012.

These tournaments should be submitted in order of preference and athletes who meet the appropriate criteria for each category of event will be selected for these events based upon their ranking on the USA Judo Senior National Roster, dated December 1, 2012.

After all submissions have been made with the accompanying fee of $100 PER TOURNAMENT, the top-ranked athlete on the aforementioned roster will be granted entry into his or her first four tournament choices.

The #2-ranked athlete on the aforementioned roster will be granted entry into his or her first three tournament choices.

Subsequent athletes will be granted entry into a maximum of two tournament choices provided that the maximum number of competitors in said choices has not been reached by higher ranked athletes.

Once the tournament request list has been exhausted in this fashion, the Athlete Performance Committee will grant two additional selections to the #1-ranked athlete, two to the #2-ranked athlete and two to each subsequent athlete, moving down the roster in a progressive manner.

If slots remain, athletes ranked #3 and lower will receive a maximum of two additional selections, following the method listed above.

At this stage, athletes WILL ONLY be selected for events on the preference list submitted by December 19, 2012. Athletes who submit fewer than six selections and/or do not pay the reservation fee of $100 per selection will only be eligible for the events listed by the athlete on December 19, 2012.

Under no circumstance may an athlete submit more than six tournament requests on December 19, 2012.

All athletes will be notified of the status of their selections by December 21, 2012. These selections also will be posted on this page by December 21, 2012.

REMINDER: Athletes requesting to compete in Grand Prix or Grand Slam events must meet the requirements listed above prior to the competition.

SECOND SELECTION PERIOD: December 27, 2012

Athletes who have been approved to compete on the World Tour by the Athlete Performance Committee may select to compete in a maximum of six Continental open, Grand Prix, or Grand Slam tournaments, listed in order of preference. These athletes must submit their selections by 5 p.m. Mountain Time on December 27, 2012.

Although athletes may submit up to six selections, each athlete will receive a maximum of TWO tournament entries during this period.

Again, all athletes requesting to compete in Grand Slam or Grand Prix tournaments must meet the criteria above.

Should more than athletes request to compete in an event than there are slots available, the highest ranked athlete on the aforementioned roster who requests to compete in the event will be selected.

All athletes who make selections in this round will be notified of the status of their selections by December 28, 2012. These selections also will be posted on this page by December 28, 2012.

OPEN SELECTION: December 31, 2012

Beginning at 8 a.m. Mountain Time on December 31, 2012, the World Tour will be opened to all players qualified to compete, per the criteria listed above, on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This matrix will be continuously updated as athletes select to compete in events or withdraw from tournaments. Please visit this page frequently as this will be where all updates will be made.

NOTE: Any athlete withdrawals made throughout the year will be noted on the matrix.

Forms and Entry Fees

A $100 non-refundable deposit will be charged to your credit card in order to hold your position.

Thirty days prior to the event the balance of the lodging, entry fees, etc. will be charged to your credit card. This is done so that USA Judo may wire the funds requested by the international federation. Requests for tournament information have been made to all international federations involved by either fax or e-mail; however we have not at this writing received all tournament packages.

REMINDER: The $100 deposit is NON-REFUNDABLE and CANNOT be transferred to any other tournament.

The day following each ranked athletes' response date, an updated matrix, showing the events taken by each criteria athlete will be posted on the USA Judo Web site at World Tour.

All elite athletes are asked to provide USA Judo's National Office with an e-mail contact address. All athletes are reminded that participation according to your selection priority must be received by the above published deadline, and in writing, via e-mail to cory.sanders@usajudo.us.

Athletes who have not provided USA Judo with an itinerary and paid any required fees by 21 days prior to the event will be removed from the roster of athletes competing in that event.

All athletes must have paid all outstanding debts to USA Judo and be compliant with USADA regulations at the time of submission.

Training Camps

Many of the World Tour events will have associated training camps following the conclusion of the tournament. Players are encouraged to participate in the training camps and any athlete who is ranked with a C-Level or higher on the USA Judo Senior Elite National Roster, dated December 1, 2012, may participate in a training camp even if he or she is not participating in the event preceding the camp.
