Apr 20 JUDO: Yuko Sin Places Ninth at Swiss Open

For Immediate Release April 20, 2008 Contact: Nicole Jomantas, 719.271.9937 (cell) Nicole.Jomantas@usajudo.us (Colorado Springs, Colo.)-Yuko Sin (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) had the best finish for Team USA at the Swiss Open, a B-Level Point Tournament, when he placed ninth in the 90kg division in Baar, Switzerland on Sunday. Sin ended his first two matches against Antonio Detricone (BEL) and Mirko Kaiser (LIE) by ippon (instant win) in less than a minute. In the quarter finals, Sin was down by koka (smallest points) and yuko (quarter-point) scores before losing by ippon to two-time World Cup medalist Viktor Semenov (RUS). Sin dropped down to the repechage where he lost by a yuko to Antoine Jeannin (FRA) to place ninth. Rhonda Morrell-Pruitt (Centerville, Ohio / Shudokan Judo Club) also competed on Sunday, but lost by a yuko in the first round of the 78kg division to British junior Louise Little. On Saturday, four U.S. players fought in the first day of the tournament with 2008 National Champion Bobby Lee (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE) earning the only match win for the team that day. Lee won his first match against Michael Sohm (AUT), but lost in the next round to 2008 Belgium Open silver medalist Fabian Seidlmeier (GER). Michael Eldred (Fruitland, Idaho / Western Idaho Judo Institute), a five-time international medalist in 2007, also competed in the 73kg division, but lost in the first round to Peter Scharinger (AUT). Pauline Macias (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) fought up from 57kg to 63kg, but lost in the first round to Cindy Madelrieux (FRA). D'Anya Bierria (Castle Rock, Colo. / Timberline Judo) also competed in the 63kg division, losing in the first round to five-time World Cup medalist Africa Gutierrez (ESP).
