May 18 Travis Stevens Receives Top-Eight Ranking on World Roster

May 18, 2009, 3:59 p.m. (ET)

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - Olympian Travis Stevens (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) joined an elite group of judo players last week when he was ranked #8 in the world as an 81kg player on the International Judo Federation's latest World Rankings list.

Stevens received his ranking due largely to his gold medal win at the Pan American Championships earlier this season.

Should Stevens maintain his top-eight ranking through August, he will receive the benefit of being one of the division's seeded players when he competes at the World Championships, Aug. 26-29 in Rotterdam Netherlands.

A ninth-place finisher at the 2009 Olympic Games, Stevens is one of the top hopefuls to win a World medal which would make him the first U.S. player ever to win a World medal in the 81kg division.

Garry St. Leger (Brooklyn, N.Y. / NYAC / Legrosports Starrett) also received a high ranking on the World Roster where he is 19th in the 90kg division after his bronze medal finish at the Pan American Championships.
