May 26, 2009, 1:11 p.m. (ET)

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - Ten years after becoming just the second U.S. man to win a World Judo Championship, USA Judo is pleased to announce that Jimmy Pedro (Wakefield, Mass.) will serve as the head coach of the 2009 World Team.

Pedro will coach 14 U.S. athletes at the World Championships from Aug. 26-30 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

"I am honored to have been selected by USA Judo for the position of World Team Head Coach," said Pedro, a four-time Olympian who retired from competition after winning his second Olympic bronze medal at the 2004 Games.  "Since retirement I have been working as the Co-Director of the U23 Team program and now many of these kids are our nation's best.  I look forward to working with them at this year's Worlds in Rotterdam and over the next three years leading up to the 2012 Olympics."

As a coach, Pedro has produced many of the top athletes in the United States with four athletes qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, including World and Olympic bronze medalist Ronda Rousey (Santa Monica, Calif.)

This year, five of the 14 World Team members, hail from Pedro's club - the USA Judo National Team FORCE in Wakefield, Mass.
