Irvine, CA Competition busted through the ceiling for USA Judo’s second annual National Presidents Cup over the weekend with nearly four times the number of competitors fighting as did last year at this event.

This is the latest of several USA Judo tournaments that have seen big increases in the number of fighters, said Corinne Shigemoto, USA Judo’s Director of Events and Membership. “We’re on a roll,” she said. “And we’ve got the Junior Olympics coming up in July. That’s a super popular tournament and we’re expecting a bump in numbers there, too.”

A total of 263 competitors registered for the two-day tournament in Irvine, CA, way up from the 70 fighters who attended last year to Vail, CO.

Among those topping the senior podium for gold on Day 1 were:

Angelica Delgado, 57 kg, and Lauren Baez, 63 kg, both from Ki-Itsu-Sai National Training Center in Coral Springs, FL.

Kati Sell, 70 kg U.S. Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs, CO.

Suzie Rizek, 78 kg, Fox Valley Judo Club, Naperville, Illinois.

Elor Ronny, +78 kg, CYC Judo, Concord, CA.

Harmik Aghakhani, 73 kg of Glendale, CA, Hayastan Judo.

Jonathan Fernandez, 81 kg., Baragua Judo Kai in Florida.

Jacob Larsen, 90 kg Boulder Judo Training Center/U.S. Olympic Training Center, CO.

Tokuzo Takahashi, 100 kg., of Tenri LA.

Changun Paik, +100 kg., Thomas Dojo.
