Jan 19 Team USA Juniors Take Gold Silver Bronze At Australia Youth Olympic Festival

U.S. juniors scored a gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the first Australian Youth Olympic Festival today in Sydney, Australia, a huge accomplishment for young, up-and-coming stars under the glaring lights of a high-profile, multi-sport event far away from home.

Mackenzie Williams, 63 kg, of Becerra Judo and Jujitsu in El Lago, TX, took gold for Team USA in Sydney.

Taking silver were Devin Sobay, 81 kg., of Texoma Judo and Jujitsu of Wichita Falls, TX; and Rachel Butler, 63 kg, also of Tri-Valley Judo, Pleasanton, CA.

Climbing the podium for bronze were Kyle Wright, 73 kg., U.S. Citizen of St. Gallen, Switzerland; Amber Pair, 48, kg., McCall Judo Club, Cascade, ID; and Nicole Stout, 57 kg., Sasaki Judo Club, Orlando, FL.

Also fighting today were William Noah Pineda-Abaya, 60 kg. of Hawaii Tenri Judo, Honolulu, who barely missed the podium losing in the bronze round; Gabriela Rivera, 52 kg., Somerset Academy-Panther Judo Club of Pembroke Pines, FL, won a 4th Place; Myles Stevens, 66 kg., Tidewater Judo Club, Virginia Beach, VA; took 5th in round robin.

Head Coach of the team is Dr. Greg Chow of Hawaii Tenri Judo and Assistant Coach is Lou Moyerman of Liberty Bell Judo.

Nearly 20 sports were represented at the Australia Youth Olympic Festival, judo among them, as one of the most popular sports on the planet.
