A Third of Teens Come From Judo Foundry Florida, Including Four From Miami Area, One From Jacksonville, One From Tampa

July 26, 2013 - Nearly a third of the teenagers on USA Judo’s team headed to the World Cadet Championships in two weeks all come from Florida, reminding the nation once again that this state is a hotbed of up-and-coming judo fighters determined to reach the most elite competition on the planet.

Perfect for these Florida teens, the World Cadet Championships this year is being hosted by USA Judo and held in Miami at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa. This is the first time that USA Judo has hosted this prestigious event, the most elite international judo tournament held for juniors on U.S. soil in recent years.

The tournament already has attracted more than 550 young athletes from more than 80 nations with particularly large teams coming from judo power plants like Mongolia, Russia, Japan and Khazakstan. These young guns, ages 15-17, will be hunting for a piece of the $50,000 in prize money split between those making the podiums. This is also the qualifying tournament for athletes shooting for a berth at the Youth Olympic Games next year in Nanjing.

The U.S. team of young competitors had to qualify for the World Cadet Championships by taking medals at USA Judo’s Scholastic National Championships in March. A few wildcard slots were filled at USA Judo’s Junior Olympic Championships held in Irving, TX, at the end of June.

The roster of Florida athletes, six of the 19 total on the U.S. team, follows along with their club names:

Ashlyn White, 48 kg, Pembroke Pines, FL, Somerset Academy-Panther Judo Club, Pembroke Pines, FL.

Katherine Lieby, 52 kg., Pembroke Pines, FL, Somerset Academy-Panther Judo Club, Pembroke Pines, FL.

Sarah Subko, Valrico, 57 kg. FL, Florida School of Judo Inc, Tampa, FL

Nadine Fiege, 70+ kg, Atlantic Beach, FL, Judo Jax, FL

Brian Abreu, 50 kg, Miami, FL, Budokan Judo, Hialeah, FL
