National Team completes preparations for ISF World Championships
Christchurch, N.Z.---The USA Softball Men’s National Team, in search of its sixth ISF World Championship, completed its preparations for the tournament with a two game sweep of South Africa and Argentina in exhibition action.
The USA opens the World Championships on Thursday, January 29 versus Botswana at 7 p.m. EST.
With a commanding 7-1 win over South Africa, the U.S. managed to pound out 13 hits and played flawless defense. Michael White (Eugene, OR) picked up the win allowing only five hits while striking out seven. Cody Thompson (Salt Lake City, UT), traveling with the team as the batting practice pitcher, worked two innings of relief and allowed a run on two hits.
Adam LaLonde (Cheboygan, MI) was the only U.S. player to pick up more than one hit going 2-for-3, while Chris DeLarwelle (Appleton, WI) drove in two RBI. DeLarwelle and Chris Miljavac (St. Joseph, MO) each hit inside the park home runs to highlight the U.S. scoring effort.
Against Argentina, the U.S. used home run efforts by Miljavac and DeLarwelle to pick up the 2-0 win. Doug Middleton (Blue Springs, MO) got the win after shutting out the Argentines for five complete innings. He only allowed three hits and fanned five. Thompson picked up the save pitching two innings of no-hit softball while striking out two.
DeLarwelle and Ross Dey (Sedalia, MO) each had two hits in the game. Joe Morales (El Paso, TX), Mike Dryer (Blue Springs, MO) and Todd Garcia (Woodbridge, CA) had the other hits for the U.S.
The U.S. enters the XI ISf Men’s World Championship as the No. 3 seed and looks to capture its first World title since 1988. The U.S. is paired with Japan, Czech Republic, Argentina, Botswana, Great Britain and Hong Kong in Pool B. The gold medal game of the championship is scheduled for Saturday, February 7 at 9 p.m. EST.
