– The Walnut Creek Aquanuts swept all four finals events and scored 89 points en route to capture the 2011 U.S. Junior high-point title this week at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. The Santa Clara Aquamaids (40 points) and Arizona Aqua Stars (19 points) finished in second and third places, respectively.
Today’s competition featured the finals of the solo, duet, team and combo events. In the solo event, Walnut Creek’s Alexa Tchekmarev was crowned the 2011 U.S. national champion after posting a score of 155.2375. Teammates Alyson Haylor (152.9425) and Kaitlin Staines (150.4395) joined her on the medal stand in the silver and bronze medal positions.
In the duet, Walnut Creek’s Haylor and Marisa Tashima grabbed the title of duet national
champions with a score of 152.5250. Santa Clara’s Kathryn Spada and Evelyn Wang
(149.5065) took second place while teammates Ekaterina Frelikh and Dennise Ramirez
In the team event, Walnut Creek finished the semifinal competition in the top spot with a
153.8150. Santa Clara (149.7300) took home the silver medal while Walnut Creek’s “B” team claimed the bronze.
In the combination routine, Walnut Creek scored an 83.900 followed by the Walnut Creek “B” team which posted a 79.1375. The Coral Springs Aquacades finished in the third place postion with a 75.550.
The event featured athletes ages 15-18, who competed for Junior national titles in the solo, duet, team and combo events. Top routines from the 2011 U.S. Junior Championships advanced to the 2011 U.S. National Championships, which will take place April 14-16, in Columbus, Ohio.
The elite junior championship were hosted by the Central Florida Sport Commission and Lake County and marks the second time the event has been held in Clermont. The event was previously hosted in south Lake County in 2008.
