LONDON – Mary Killman (McKinney, Texas) and Maria Koroleva (Concord, Calif.) provided a strong start for Team USA on Wednesday, placing seventh in the duet technical at the FINA Olympic Games Synchronized Swimming Qualification Tournament.
US duet in seventh place at FINA Olympic Games Synchronized Swimming Qualification Tournament
The U.S. duet scored an 88.400. That score plus Friday’s free routine point total will determine which of the 33 duets competing this week at the London Aquatics Centre will advance to this summer’s Olympic Games.
Nine countries are vying for three qualification places in the team competition, which begins Thursday with the team technical. Any country that qualifies in the team event automatically qualifies a duet. The next best-ranked duets will qualify until the maximum number of 24 duets for the Olympics is reached.
Russia’s Natalia Ischenko and Svetlana Romashina are in first place after the duet technical, scoring a 97.800. Spain’s Ona Carbonell and Andrea Fuentes (96.200) are second, and Japan’s Chisa Kobayashi and Mariko Sakai (92.200) are third. Ukraine’s (92.000) and Italy’s (90.200) duets round out the top five.
Eight teams and 24 duets will compete at the London Olympics when the synchronized swimming event begins on Aug. 5. Five countries have already qualified teams (and duets) during 2011 by being the top-ranked squad at their respective continental championships. The teams that have already qualified are Canada, China, Australia, Egypt and Great Britain (as host nation).
