North American Tour Gains Momentum - the Fifteenth Tournament

The Neil Smyth Memorial Table Tennis Open in San Diego has joined the 2013 North American Tour. It will be the 15th tournament and the 6th 4-star one in the Tour. Neil Smyth was inducted to USATT Hall of Fame in 1996. His contribution to the sport of table tennis is greatly appreciated. There is no better place to host a Neil Smyth Memorial tournament than his home club - the San Diego Table Tennis Club. Here is the tournament information:

2013 North American Tour started by a few enthusiastic table tennis parties, to name a few, BATTF, ICC, Joola, and Sacramento TTC. With their initial participation, the Tour kicked off in February 2013. Later, getting some more support from the Phoenix Table Tennis Club in Arizona, Los Angeles Open in Southern California, and Lily Yip Table Tennis Club in New Jersey, the Tour grew to 14 tournaments. With the addition of the Neil Smyth Memorial, it is a 15-tournament Tour. Here is the list of the tournaments in the Tour:

Traditionally, US players had to go abroad to get proper training and competition. Over the years, there are more and more high-level professional players and coaches in the US to provide high-level training and competition environment. However, most of them have to coach to make their livings. There was little incentive for them to play competitively. The main purpose of this Tour is to encourage high-level players in the US to play the tournaments and thereby providing the needed competition for the US players.

There are over $60,000 prize money in the Open Singles events in the Tour. In addition, players can accumulate points by winning events in the Tour. At the end of the Tour, the top-16 finishers will be invited to the Grand Tour Final in early 2014. All 16 players will get prize money. A total of $6,000 is guaranteed for now. More prize money may be added later if additional sponsors are secured. Here is the current leader board:
