COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 25, 2008) - The U.S. Women's Sitting Volleyball Team swept Lithuania on Friday in its first pool-play match at the World Organization Volleyball for Disabled (WOVD) Intercontinental Cup in Ismailia, Egypt. The U.S. Women's Sitting Team won Friday's match 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-19) and will face Iran on Saturday. In the other match in the United States' pool, Slovenia defeated Iran 3-0 (25-21, 25-9, 25-18).

The United States is one of nine countries that have sent teams to the tournament. There are also 11 men's teams competing against each other at the Intercontinental Cup, which the WOVD is planning to hold every four years, prior to the Paralympic Games. The U.S. Women's Sitting Volleyball Team is ranked third in the world and qualified for the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing by virtue of its fifth-place finish at the 2006 Sitting Volleyball World Championship and because the Afro Arab zone did not have a champion to send. The U.S. Sitting Women won the bronze medal at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens. The event web site is www.volleyball08.com.

USA Volleyball's sitting volleyball web site is www.usavolleyball.org/Disabled/sitting.asp.
