Jul 04 FIVB Confirms Olympic Games Indoor Volleyball Match Time Schedule

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 4, 2008) – The FIVB, the international governing body for volleyball, announced today the 2008 Olympic Games indoor volleyball match time schedule and venue location for each contest.

The top four teams in each preliminary round pool advance to the quarterfinals (Aug. 19 for women, Aug. 20 for men) with the winner of each pool facing the fourth-place team in the opposite pool. A drawing of lots will determine the opponents for the second- and third-place teams against the opposite pool.

The quarterfinal winners advance to the semifinals (Aug. 21 for women, Aug, 22 for men). The gold and bronze medal matches take place on Aug. 23 for the women and Au. 24 for the men.

In the women’s draw, the U.S. is part of Pool A with host China, Cuba, Japan, Poland and Venezuela. Pool B consists of Algeria, Brazil, Italy, Kazakhstan, Russia and Serbia.

The U.S. Women qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games by finishing third at the 2007 FIVB World Cup, the first qualifying event for the Olympic Games. Team USA has earned a silver medal at the 1984 Olympic Games and a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympic Games.

In the men’s draw, the United States is grouped in Pool A with Bulgaria, China, Italy, Japan and Venezuela. Pool B is Brazil, Egypt, Germany, Poland, Russia and Serbia.

The U.S. Men, which qualified for the Olympic Games by capturing the NORCECA Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament in January 2008, have won gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games and took a bronze medal in 1992.

The U.S. Women open the Olympic Games on Aug. 9 versus Japan at 10 p.m. at the Capital Indoor Stadium. The Americans face NORCECA rival Cuba on Aug. 11 at 12:30 p.m. at the Capital Indoor Stadium. Team USA plays its only match at the Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium on Aug. 13 versus Venezuela at noon. The U.S. challenges China on Aug. 15 at the Capital Indoor Stadium at 8 p.m. before concluding pool play on Aug. 17 versus Poland at 12:30 p.m. at the Capital Indoor Stadium.

The U.S. Men start the Olympic Games on Aug. 10 versus Venezuela at the Capital Indoor Stadium at 12:30 p.m., followed by an Aug. 12 match versus Italy at the same time and venue. Team USA plays Bulgaria on Aug. 14 at 10 p.m. in the Capital Indoor Stadium. The Americans face China on Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. at the Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium before wrapping up pool play on Aug. 18 versus Japan at 10 p.m. at the Capital Indoor Stadium.

The U.S. Men are currently competing in the FIVB World League, the premier annual men’s international tournament. The Americans currently lead Group C with a 5-1 record with six preliminary matches yet to be played. Team USA has two matches in the United States versus Spain on July 11 and July 12. The winner of the four groups, along with the FIVB World League Finals host Brazil and one at-large team advance to the Final Round held July 23-27 at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

The U.S. Women are currently in second place in the FIVB World Grand Prix, the premier annual women’s international tournament. Team USA is 6-1 in the tournament and could wrap a spot in the six-team round robin final held July 8-13 at Yokohoma, Japan, with a victory on July 5 versus Turkey. The Americans conclude the preliminary round against second-ranked Italy on July 6.
