Meanwhile, three U.S. men's teams began pool play on Wednesday, with two going undefeated in two matches.
The U.S. women's teams of Misty May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.)/Kerri Walsh (Santa Clara, Calif.), ranked No. 1, and Jen Boss (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.)/April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), seeded eighth, both won all three of their pool play matches and advanced straight to Thursday's second round.
The team of Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.)/Elaine Youngs (El Toro, Calif.), ranked third, had a tougher time after losing its third pool-play match to Germany's 11th-seeded Stephanie Pohl/Okka Rau (18-21, 16-21)
Branagh and Youngs came back in the first round on Wednesday to defeat Russia's Natalya Uryadova and Alexandra Shiryaeva, 2-0 (21-15, 21-17). They will face Mexico's 18th-ranked Bibiana Candelas and Mayra Garcia in Thursday's second round.
Boss and Ross will face Germany's Helke Claasen and Antje Röder, ranked 15th on Thursday while May-Treanor and Walsh may have the hardest match of the day against sixth-seeded Chen Xue and Xi Zhang of China.
On the men's side, the U.S. teams of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.)/Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), ranked first, and Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah)/Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), seeded sixth, each won their first two pool-play matches on Wednesday.
The team of Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.)/Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.), seeded 10th, is 1-1 in its first two matches and will have to beat Germany's seventh-seeded David Klemperer and Eric Koreng to hope to advance to the first round.
