ANAHEIM, Calif. (May 25, 2008) - In preparation for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Exhibition for Volleyball on May 27, the U.S. Men's National Team played Argentina in an informal scrimmage on Saturday at Crawford Hall at UC Irvine. The U.S. Men won the scrimmage 3-1.

U.S. Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon started Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.) and Riley Salmon (League City, Texas) at outside hitter, Ryan Millar (Palmdale, Calif.) and David Lee (Alpine, Calif.) at middle blocker, Brandon Taliaferro (San Clemente, Calif.) at setter, Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawai'i) at opposite and Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.) at libero.

Other players who saw action were opposite Gabe Gardner (San Clemente, Calif.), setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.) and middle blocker Delano Thomas (Sacramento, Calif.).

The U.S. Men's Team will play its official exhibition match against Argentina on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Bren Events Center (for tickets, call 949-824-5000). The match will be shown on MSNBC on June 1 at noon Eastern Time (9 a.m. PT). Following that match, Argentina's men's team will go from Irvine to Japan where it will compete at the FIVB Olympic Qualification Tournament on May 31-June 8 in Tokyo.

Japan and Argentina will be joined by Algeria and Italy as well as Australia, Korea, Iran and Thailand, the four best-ranked teams at the Asian Continental Championship. The round-robin event doubles as the Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

The winner of the tournament plus the best Asian team (even if the winner is Asian) will qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

GERMANY QUALIFIES FOR BEIJING: Germany's men's volleyball team beat Spain on Sunday to earn an Olympic berth in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The team coached by Stelian Moculescu finished the tournament, which also included Spain and Chinese Taipei, unbeaten.

Germany has not appeared in the Olympic men's volleyball tournament since 1972, when East Germany won the silver medal and West Germany placed 11th.

Three Olympic vacancies for the men's tournament in Beijing are still available. One will be assigned in Espinho, Portugal on May 30-June 1 (Indonesia, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico), while the winner and the best Asian team in the Tokyo tournament will receive the last Olympic tickets.
