COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 13, 2008)
- For the second straight tournament, three U.S. women's beach teams are undefeated after the first day of main-draw play as the SWATCH FIVB Beach World Tour makes its final stop of the year in Sanya, China.
Leading the way for the Americans, top-seeded Jen Boss (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) won both of their matches on Thursday, advancing to Friday's third round. Boss and Ross kicked off main draw play with a first-round match against fellow Americans Stacy Rouwenhorst (Bellflower, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), seeded 32nd
Rouwenhorst and Pavlik, who won a qualification match on Wednesday to advance to the main draw, played the top seeds and winners of last week's FIVB event in Thailand tough in the first set before ultimately falling, 25-23, 21-12. Boss and Ross followed that up with a more convincing win in Round 2, knocking off Chen Xue and Ying Zhang of China, 21-13, 21-18, to advance.
Second-seeded Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.) made quick work of their first two opponents en route to the third round. Branagh and Turner defeated Macedonia's Manokharan Iswari and Luk Teng Kee, 21-8, 21-8, in just 29 minutes in Round 1 before beating Canada's Marie-Andrée Lessard and Annie Martin, 21-13, 21-18.
Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas), seeded fifth, also won both of their matches on Thursday to advance to Round 3. Fendrick and Ivy won their first round match against Mexico's Xitlali Herrera and Rosario Reyes, 21-16, 21-11, in 32 minutes before fending off Daniela Gioria and Giulia Momoli of Italy, 18-21, 21-17, 15-13.
After falling to Boss and Ross in Round 1, Rouwenhorst and Pavlik dropped their second match of the day and were eliminated by Isabelle Forrer and Muriel Graessli of Switzerland, 21-16, 21-10, to finish the tournament ranked 25th
In Friday's third-round matches, Boss and Ross will meet ninth-seeded Jie Wang and Man Zuo of China, Branagh and Turner will play Lu Wang and Ying Li of China and Fendrick and Ivy will face Karin Lundqvist and Angelica Ljungquist of Sweden. Two rounds of action will take place on Friday with the semifinals scheduled for Saturday.
