COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 21, 2009) - USA Volleyball held its Winter 2009 Board of Directors meeting on Jan. 17 at Costa Mesa, Calif., and several significant items were completed in the one-day meeting format under new chairman David Schreff (CEO of Bedare Sports and Entertainment in Greenwich, Conn.).

Major items discussed at the meeting included the television ratings success and overall performance of USA Volleyball at the 2008 Olympic and Paralympics (three gold medals, two silver medals); the flurry of enhanced interest in sponsorship and licensing opportunities to grow the sport in the next quadrennial; and the possibility of re-locating the U.S. Women's National Team training headquarters from Colorado Springs and how such a similar move proved to be successful for the U.S. Men's National Team in 2005.

The 2009 USA Volleyball balanced budget was reviewed and approved with careful consideration of the challenging economic issues facing the country. Despite that economic climate, USA Volleyball maintained current staffing levels and planned for event growth in beach events and beach high performance camps as well as continuing to host indoor international events such as World League, the 2009 Pan American Cup for women in Miami June 26-July 4 and the Women's Zonal Qualifier for the 2010 FIVB World Championships.

The USAV Board discussed priorities for the four-year Strategic Plan and identified the top three broad objectives as: 1) maintaining competitive success for both indoor and beach disciplines; 2) creating new member categories and increasing overall membership and participation; and 3) increasing efforts to enhance volleyball visibility and commercial attractiveness among all age groups.

Under the direction of Board Chair Pro Tem Kevin Twohig (General Manager of the Spokane Arena in Spokane, Wash.), USA Volleyball Chief Executive Officer Doug Beal's (Colorado Springs, Colo.) 2008 performance was reviewed and his employment contract extended through 2012.

"I am pleased to have my contract confirmed through the upcoming quadrennial," Beal said. "It will be a great challenge to match the success in Beijing, one that I am eager to embrace. It is particularly gratifying to see the Board grasp and articulate the vision for our association and place so much confidence in the staff to fulfill that mission on a day-to-day basis. I have been particularly impressed with the obvious contributions and input from our new independent directors as they bring a fresh viewpoint to our discussions and ongoing mission."

He took this position after leading the Men's Team to the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games. The decision on the hiring of a men's national team head coach is expected soon.

The Board is scheduled to meet again on Wednesday, May 20, in conjunction with the USAV Annual Meetings and Adult Open Championships in Minneapolis. The following meeting will be in conjunction with the Volleyball Hall of Fame Induction banquet on Oct. 29 and Oct. 30 at Holyoke, Mass.
