COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 17, 2012) – Gabe Gardner (San Clemente, Calif.), a two-time Olympian with the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team, has been elected for a second term as USA Volleyball’s athlete representative to the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Advisory Council (AAC) for the 2013-2016 quadrennial.
“I am very pleased about the trust and support shown by the athletes to re-elect me for a second term,” said Gardner, 36, who won an Olympic gold medal in 2008 in Beijing. “I am excited to produce results and represent them to the USOC.”
AAC representatives must meet the eligibility requirements of having represented the United States in Olympic Games, Pan American Games or another competition approved by the USOC within the preceding 10 years. All of the athletes meeting the AAC eligibility requirements can vote for the representatives.
U.S. Women’s National Team player Cynthia Barboza (Long Beach, Calif.) will be USAV’s alternate AAC representative as she was the female candidate to receive the most votes. The USOC requires that the alternate be of the opposite gender of the elected representative.
The AAC representatives from each sport National Governing Body meet three times a year to discuss a variety of issues of importance to Olympic-caliber athletes.
In his first term with the AAC, Gardner worked on committees to develop athlete careers with USOC sponsors and establish athlete grievance committees. This will be Gardner’s final quad as AAC representative as there is a two-term limit.
Gardner, who received an undergraduate degree in human biology from Stanford, is part of the Team USA Leadership and Learning Academy with the Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University where he is pursuing a certificate in Olympic sport leadership.
