Mens Beach Teams Advance in Austria Playoffs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 20, 2012)- The U.S. men’s
beach volleyball teams of Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal along with Phil
Dalhausser and Todd Rogers advanced to the third round of single elimination at
the A1 Grand Slam in Klagenfurt, Austria. The event is part of the 2012 FIVB
SWATCH World Tour.
Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 1,
closed pool play with a win over Latvia’s No. 16-seeded Martins Plavins and
Janis Smedins, 19-21, 21-16, 15-13 in 53 minutes.
Gibb and Rosenthal advanced to the single-elimination bracket, and earned a
first-round victory over the Swiss team of Martin Laciga and Jonas Weingart (No.
22), 21-14, 21-15 in 33 minutes.
The Olympic-bound duo is still on point to earn their fourth consecutive
podium appearance after taking gold in Rome and Gstaad and silver in Berlin.
In Saturday’s third-round matchup, Gibb and Rosenthal will take on the
Netherlands’ 26th-seeded Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen.
The third round of single elimination is also slated for Saturday.
Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Calif.) and Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), seeded
No. 2 in Klagenfurt, will also be representing the U.S. at the 2012 Olympic
Games.
Dalhausser and Rogers concluded pool play with a win over the
15th-seeded Polish team of Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel 21-18,
15-21, 15-11 in 55 minutes.
Dalhausser and Rogers earned a first-round bye in single elimination. On
Saturday, they are slated to face Italy’s 11th-seeded Nicolai Paolo
and Daniele Lupo.
Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale,
Fla.), seeded No. 7, closed pool play with a win over the Norwegian team of Iver
Andreas Horrem and Geir Eithun (No. 29), 21-19, 21-9 in 37 minutes.
Fuerbringer and Lucena advanced to the first round of single elimination but
fell to Switzerland’s No. 23-seeded Sascha Heyer and Sebastian Chevallier,
21-18, 21-18 in 40 minutes.
Fuerbringer and Lucena finished their run at Klagenfurt in 17th
place.
