COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 1, 2012) - The U.S. Paralympics Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team cruised past Slovenia in three quick sets, 25-8, 25-15, 25-8 in Saturday evening’s Paralympic Games preliminary match at the ExCeL London.
Advancing to a 1-1 record, the U.S. executed the win with help from eight different point scorers. Team leaders included Katie Holloway (Lake Stevens, Wash.) who posted 10 points off of nine kills and a service ace and Heather Erickson (Fayetteville, N.C.) who also tallied 10 from a match-high five service aces and five kills. Allie Aldrich (Schuyler, Neb.) joined the 10-point list with four service aces and six kills in just two sets of play.
U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team head coach Bill Hamiter started Brenda Maymon (Charlestown, Ind.), Holloway, Erickson, Monique Burkland (Ardmore, Okla.), Aldrich, Nichole Millage (Champaign, Ill.) and libero Kari Miller (Washington, D.C.).
The entire American squad clocked playing time during the match with U.S. captain Kendra Lancaster (Westfield, Ind.) subbing in the first and third sets, Kaleo Kanahele starting the second set, Michelle Gerlosky (Lake Wales, Fla.) subbing in during the second and third sets and Lora Webster (Phoenix, Ariz.) starting the third.
Burkland contributed seven points for Team USA off of five kills, one block and one service ace. Webster didn’t hold anything back in the third set with five points off of two service aces, two kills and a block. Maymon and Millage tallied four points each with Maymon connecting on three kills and a block and Millage on four kills. Kanahele put a kill in the books in the second set.
Miller posted an 82 percent total reception rating, 73 percent excellent.
The U.S. posted a 3-1 blocking and 35-12 kill advantage over Slovenia and connected on 13 service aces to its opponents one.
Team USA will take a day off before facing Brazil on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. London time (11 a.m. PST). The match will be live streamed online on channel 5 at http://www.paralympic.org/.
