Schumacher, Ross Move On to Playoffs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 23, 2013) – The women’s beach team of Kelly Schumacher and Summer Ross finished third in Pool A on Friday to advance to the first round of playoffs at the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam in Russia.
In the final round of pool play, Schumacher and Ross dropped two consecutive sets to Switzerland’s No. 17 seed, Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre, 21-15, 21-17.
The Americans, now 1-2, qualified to compete in the first round of playoffs where they will face Switzerland’s Tanja Goricanec and Tanja Huberli (1-2), who finished second in Pool D.
On the first day of pool play, the Americans upset Russia’s No. 1 seeded, Evgenia Ukolova and Ekaterina Khomyakova 21-17, 14-21, 19-17. Later that day, the U.S. fell to Austria’s Barbra Hansel and Katharina Schutzenhofer, seeded No. 16, in another tight match (18-21, 21-19, 15-8).
Ross and Schumacher earned their spot in the main draw in the qualification round on Wednesday defeating Chile’s Maria Francisca Rivas Zapata and Camila Pazdirek Peteri, 21-11, 21-11.
Semifinals and finals are scheduled for Sunday.
