U.S. Beach Teams Continue Pool Play at World

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 2, 2013) – U.S teams either continued or began pool play at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships on Tuesday in Stare Jablonki, Poland.
On the second day of pool play for the women’s teams, the U.S pair of April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 3, defeated Canada’s No. 27 Jamie Lynn Broder and Kristina Valjas, 21-11, 21-18 in 37 minutes. No. 22 Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) also won, beating Netherlands’ No. 46 Laura Bloem and Rebekka Kadijk, 19-21, 21-9, 15-8 in 42 minutes.
Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 3, were the lone U.S. team to win on the first day of men’s pool play, as they defeated Mexico’s No. 46 Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros, 21-15, 21-17 in 36 minutes.
After pulling off a pool play upset on Monday, No. 22 Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) fell to Netherlands’ No. 4 Madelein Meppelink and Sophie van Gestel, 21-17, 21-23, 15-10 in 50 minutes on Tuesday. Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.), seeded No. 39, lost to Czech Republic’s No. 15 Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova, 21-19, 21-16 in 35 minutes.
On the men’s side, No. 4 Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) were upset by No. 45 Popov Sergiy and Valeriy Samoday of Ukraine, 21-17, 21-14 in 32 minutes. No. 17-seeded Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) fell to Venezuela’s No. 32 Igor Hernandez and Jesus Villafañe, 21-18, 25-27, 15-11 in 58 minutes.
In the final match of a day in which play was delayed by storms, No. 33 Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and John Hyden lost a battle to Germany’s No. 16 Sebastian Fuchs and Thomas Kaczmarek, 17-21, 21-16, 24-22.
The women will play their final pool play matches on Wednesday. April Ross and Pavlik will take on Bloem and Kadijk while Fendrick and Hochevar will face Broder and Valjas.
Fopma and Sweat will play No. 45 Patricia Peña and Michelle Amarilla of Paraguay and Day and Summer Ross will face Russia’s No. 34 Maria Prokopeva and Svetlana Popova.
For the men, Dalhausser and Rosenthal will face No. 27 Sebastian Chevallier and Mats Kovatsch of Switzerland. Gibb and Patterson will go up against Norway’s No. 28 Iver Andreas Horrem and Geir Eithun.
Rogers and Doherty will play Argentina’s No. 41 Pablo Bianchi and Facundo Del Coto. Lucena and Hyden will take on Italy’s No. 9 Nicolai Paolo and Daniele Lupo.
Men’s pool play will conclude on July 4 with the first round of single elimination on July 5. The second round and quarterfinals will be played on July 6 with the semifinals and finals on July 7.
Women’s pool play will finish on July 3. The first round will be played July 4, followed by the second round and quarterfinals on July 5 and the semifinals and finals on July 6.
