RENO, Nev. (July 3, 2013) – Gold medals were awarded Wednesday in the 16 Open and Club divisions at the 2013 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships being held in Reno, Nev., until July 4. The HBC 16-KC (Huntington Beach, Calif.) took the top spot in 16 Open, while High Line Volleyball Club (HLVBC) 16 Nike (Long Beach, Calif.) earned gold in 16 Club.
The 16 Open division saw The HBC 16-KC (Southern California Region) face off against Balboa Bay 16 Hurley (Costa Mesa, Calif., Southern California Region).
The beginning of the first set belonged to The HBC, as it got out to a 7-3 lead. That lead stretched to as many as seven points and Balboa Bay was unable to recover. The HBC won the first set 25-19.

The second set began with Balboa Bay gaining the advantage, but The HBC fought back to tie the score at nine apiece. Balboa Bay was again able to pull ahead and lead 16-14, but that lead didn’t last long as The HBC tied things up at 18-all and took a 23-20 lead. Balboa Bay rallied late, but The HBC hung on to win the set 25-23 and the match 2-0.
“It came down to us being able to transition with our blocking defense and we did just enough in the second set,” The HBC Head Coach Kasey Harwell said. “This [gold medal win] is a repeat for all the guys. It’s a good feeling that they were able to repeat. It’s a tough thing to do.”
The HBC 16-KC was the top overall seed in its division and finished with a perfect 11-0 record. Balboa Bay 16 Hurley was seeded third overall, finishing with a record of 8-3.
The teams of Coastal B16 Navy (Suffolk, Va., Old Dominion Region) and Santa Monica Beach Club 16 Black (Los Angeles, Calif., Southern California) earned the bronze.
The 16 Club division gold-medal match pitted High Line Volleyball Club (HLVBC) 16 Nike (Southern California Region) against Northern California Volleyball Club (NCVC) Blue 16-2 (Rockland, Calif., Northern California Region).
HLVBC 16 Nike maintained a slight edge in the beginning stages of the first set and led 16-9. That lead would extend to eight points before NCVC Blue 16-2 was able to use several spectacular defensive plays and long rallies to begin to narrow the gap. But HLVBC’s advantage was ultimately too much to overcome as it took the first set 25-17.

The second set began in much the same way as HLVBC took the early lead. HLVBC quickly stormed out to a 17-7 advantage, the largest lead of the match. The gap widened to 12, at 22-10. NCVC Blue fought valiantly with several late points, but was unable to get within reach and HLVBC won the set 25-16 and the match 2-0.
“It means everything to the guys,” HLVBC Head Coach Brett Massetti said. “They dedicate themselves to this. We put them through so much. We train hard, we work them hard, and they wouldn’t do this if they didn’t love the game. So I know this means everything to them and it makes me really happy that they were able to accomplish this.”
HLVBC was seeded ninth overall in its division in the tournament and finished with a record of 12-1. NCVC Blue was seeded seventh and earned an 11-2 record.
Claiming bronze were the teams of Northern California Volleyball Club Black 16-1 (Rockland, Calif., Northern California Region) and WAVE 16 Asics (Del Mar, Calif., Southern California Region).
