COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 5, 2013) – The U.S. beach volleyball team of Meg Norton and Brittany Tiegs has advanced through to the main draw at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World Championships as competition began on June 5 in Myslowice, Poland.
Norton (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and Tiegs (Stuart, Fla.) had a bye through the first round of qualifications after being seeded first. In round two, they defeated Ukraine’s Olena Basanova and Valentyna Hrytsyuk 19-21, 21-19, 15-12 in 43 minutes to snag one of four available places in the main draw.
Devon Hatcher (Los Osos, Calif.) and Parker Kalmbach (Newport Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 1 in the men’s qualification bracket, were defeated in qualifications and will not advance after losing to the Norwegian pair of Svein Oddmund Solhaug and Daniel Bergerud in the final round of qualification. Despite winning the first set 21-17, they dropped the next two sets 21-17 and 15-10. After a bye in round one, Hatcher and Kalmbach defeated Norway’s Lars Tveit Retterholt and Hendrik Nikolai Mol 21-19, 21-12 in a 39-minute round-two qualification match in 39 minutes.
Norton and Tiegs join compatriots Tara Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Kirby Burnham (Newport Beach, Calif.) in the main draw pool play. Alex Jones (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Kyle Stevenson (Santa Monica, Calif.) will be represent the United States in the men’s main draw. Both the men’s and women’s main draw pool play begins on June 6.
Norton and Tiegs, seeded No. 23, move into Pool G and will take on the 10th-seeded Spanish duo of Paula Soria Gutierrez and Raquel Brun Forcadell in their first match. Next up will be the seventh-seed Rimke Braakman and Jolien Sinnema of the Netherlands. Norton and Tiegs wrap up pool play against 26th-seeded Ilze Liepinlauska and Sandra Ragozina of Latvia on Friday.
Roenicke and Burnham, seeded third and in Pool C, kick off play with a match against the yet unnamed 30th seed coming from the qualification round. The U.S. pair will then take on Costa Rica’s 19th-seeded team of Cristina Monterrey and Catalina Zuniga in its second match. Roenicke and Burnham’s final match in pool play will be on Friday against Canada’s Taylor Pischke and Melissa Humana-Paredes, who are seeded No. 14.
The second-seeded Jones and Stevenson will commence Pool B against Norway’s Retterholt and Mol, who are seeded No. 31. The pair challenges 18th-seeded Ruben Alejandro Mora Romero and Miguel Angel Lopez Lopez of Nicaragua in the second pool match. Jones and Stevenson will face the 15th-seeded Mexican tandem of Juan Revuelta and Ricardo Galindo on Friday to finish pool play.
