Three Women's Beach Teams Advance in Rome

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 20, 2013) – April Ross finished pool play undefeated with partner Jennifer Kessy at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Rome Grand Slam on Thursday, while two U.S. men’s teams are now 2-0 in pool play.

Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), seeded No. 7, defeated Spain’s No. 10 Liliana Fernández Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan (21-15, 27-25 in 45 minutes) in their final main draw pool play match on Thursday to advance to the second round of single-elimination play.
Two other U.S. women’s beach teams advanced to the first round of single-elimination on Thursday.
After going 1-1 on Wednesday, the No. 19 seeded Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) defeated Canada’s No. 30 Sarah Pavan and Heather Bansley (18-21, 21-13, 15-9 in 50 minutes) to advance to the first round where they will play Switzerland’s No. 21 Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré on Friday.
The No. 24 seeded team of Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) also went 2-1 in pool play after defeating Germany’s No. 25 Jana Köhler and Anni Schumacher on Thursday. The U.S. pair will play Kazakhstan’s No. 22 Tatyana Mashkova and Irina Tsimbalova in the first round.
The U.S. team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 28, lost its final pool play match on Thursday and did not advance.
Teams competing in the men’s bracket played their second pool-play matches on Thursday. The U.S. team of No. 3 Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) improved to 2-0 with a 21-13, 21-17 victory in 37 minutes over Australia’s No. 19 Isaac Kapa and Christopher McHugh.
Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 4, also went 2-0 with a 17-21, 21-13, 15-11 win in 56 minutes over Netherlands’ No. 20 Daan Spijkers and Christiaan Varenhorst.
The U.S. team of Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.), seeded No. 18, fell to 0-2 with a 21-16, 21-14 loss in 36 minutes to Brazil’s No. 2 Pedro Solberg Salgado and Bruno Oscar Schmidt.
The men’s pool play matches will conclude on Friday, when the first round of single-elimination will also be played.
