COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 21, 2013) – April Ross and Jennifer Kessy advanced to the third round at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Rome Grand Slam on Friday, while the U.S. men’s teams of Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal along with Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson made it to the second round.

Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), seeded No. 7, had to defeat U.S. teammates Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), seeded No. 24, in the second round on Friday, 21-15, 21-19 in 40 minutes.
Ross and Kessy will face Italy’s No. 1 seeded Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Fopma and Sweat defeated Kazakhstan’s No. 22 Tatyana Mashkova and Irina Tsimbalova in the first round, 17-21, 21-19, 18-16 in 57 minutes.
The No. 19 seeded Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) also advanced with a first-round victory over Switzerland’s No. 21 Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré, 29-27, 17-21, 15-10 in 1 hour, 3 minutes, the longest match of the women’s tournament so far. Fendrick and Hochevar fell in the second round to Slovakia’s No 20 Natalia Dubovcova and Dominika Nestarcova, 21-19, 14-21, 17-19 in 58 minutes.
On the men’s side, Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 3, completed pool play undefeated with a 21-14, 21-18 victory in 40 minutes over Netherlands’ No. 14 Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen. The U.S. pair advanced straight to the second round where they will play Kazakhstan’s No. 15 Alexey Sidorenko and Alexandr Dyachenko on Saturday.
Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 4, lost their final pool play match to Germany’s No. 13 Sebastian Dollinger and Stefan Windscheif, 21-17, 17-21, 15-10 in 48 minutes. Nevertheless, they advanced to the second round where they will play Brazil’s No. 7 Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego on Saturday.
The U.S. team of Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.), seeded No. 18, was eliminated Friday when it lost in the first round to Australia’s No. 19 Isaac Kapa and Christopher McHugh, 12-21, 21-18, 15-11 in 50 minutes.
