Two U.S. Beach Teams Advance in Argentina

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 24, 2013) – Two U.S. beach volleyball teams remained competing on Friday at the FIVB Corrientes Grand Slam in Argentina.

On the women’s side, April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), seeded No. 2, won two three-set matches to advance to Saturday’s third round.
In the men’s bracket, Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 7, lost their final pool play match, but won in the first round to advance to Saturday’s second round.
Ross and Kessy won their pool on Friday by winning their final pool play over Australia’s No. 15 Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy (18-21, 21-9, 15-8 in 45 minutes). The U.S. team advanced to the second round where they defeated the Czech Republic’s No. 7 Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova (17-21, 21-19, 15-13 in 55 minutes).
In Saturday’s third round Ross and Kessy will play Spain’s No. 9 Liliana Fernández Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan.
Gibb and Patterson lost their final pool play match to Italy’s No. 26 Matteo Ingrosso and Paolo Ingrosso, 22-20, 21-17 in 43 minutes. They came back with a first-round victory over Russia’s No. 19 Konstantin Semenov and Yaroslav Koshkarev (13-21, 21-16, 15-13 in 46 minutes).
On Saturday, Gibb and Patterson will play Brazil’s No. 2 Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego.
The U.S. men’s team of No. 10 Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) advanced to the first round where it fell to Austria’s Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst (19-21, 21-18, 24-22 in 1 hour, 4 minutes).
The team of No. 15 Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) advanced to the first round where it fell to Switzerland’s No. 25 Philip Gabathuler and Jonas Weingart, 21-13, 21-12 in 34 minutes.
The U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Ind.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) advanced to the first round where it fell to Bawden and Clancy (24-26, 21-19, 15-8 in 56 minutes).
Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) advanced to the first round where they fell to Russia’s No. 32 Maria Prokopeva and Irina Chaika (21-18, 21-19 in 35 minutes).
The gold medal teams in each gender in the FIVB Corrientes Grand Slam will each split $33,000, the silver $22,000, the bronze $16,500 and fourth place $12,900. The women’s medal matches will be held on Saturday and the men’s medal matches on Sunday. The FIVB Corrientes Grand Slam will be the 286th FIVB men’s event since the FIVB began play in 1989 and the 248th FIVB women’s tournament since they started in 1992.
