COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 21, 2013) – Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat won the women’s championship while Theo Brunner and Nick Lucena captured the men’s title on Sunday at the smart AVP Championships at Huntington Beach.

In the men’s championship match, No. 4 Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) defeated No. 3 Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii) and John Hyden (San Diego), 23-21, 7-21, 15-13. The final was a rematch of the NORCECA Beach Circuit final on Oct. 6 in Chula Vista, Calif., which Brunner and Lucena also won.
In the women’s final, Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), seeded No. 4, defeated No. 3 Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.), 21-19, 15-21, 15-9.
Fopma and Sweat had to fight their way through the consolation bracket after falling in their first-round match to No. 13 Annett Davis and Morgan Miller, 14-21, 21-14, 15-13. In the semifinals, Fopma and Sweat defeated No. 2 Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), 18-21, 21-19, 15-13.
Fendrick and Hochevar lost to Day and Ross in the third round (21-18, 12-21, 15-11), but made it back to the semifinals, where they defeated top-seeded April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh Jennings (Saratoga, Calif.), 21-15, 21-17. With the loss, Walsh Jennings missed a chance to set the all-time record for tournament victories by a women’s beach player. She is currently tied with her former partner Misty May-Treanor at 112.
Brunner and Lucena made it through the Huntington men’s winners’ bracket undefeated. In the semifinals, they toppled top-seeded Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), 19-21, 26-24, 15-13. Bourne and Hyden were also undefeated until the final. In the semis, they beat Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), 21-11, 21-18.
Huntington Beach was the final stop on the 2013 AVP Tour.
FIVB XIAMEN GRAND SLAM
Twelve beach players who competed in Huntington headed straight for China for the FIVB Xiamen Grand Slam, which begins Tuesday.
On the women’s side, Ross and Walsh Jennings, Fopma and Sweat and also Hochevar and Fendrick are entered in the main draw. Day and Ross are entered in the qualification bracket.
For the men, Gibb and Patterson are in the main draw along with Brunner and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.). Stafford Slick (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) are seeded No. 8 in qualifying and will open against Kazakhstan's No. 9 Dmitriy Yakovlev and Alexey Kuleshov on Tuesday.
