Joe Betterman and Jermaine Hodge won gold medals Sunday in the Haparanda Cup of Greco-Roman wrestling in Sweden. Betterman, a 2007 U.S. World Team member, won all five of his matches at 60 kg/132 pounds, which conducted a six-wrestler, round-robin. He edged eventual silver medalist Ruslan Israfilov of Ukraine, 0-1, 1-1, 2-0 and shutout eventual bronze medalist Oleg Drozdov of Russia, 1-0, 2-0. All three wrestlers at 55 kg/121 pounds finished 1-1, but Hodge won the tie-breaking procedure of most points scored. He beat Russia’s Ivan Blattsev but lost to Ukraine’s Jevgeni Miagkyi.

Just Ahead: Folkstyle Tour of America’s Salt Lake Slam for Schoolboy/Girl Novice Intermediate and Bantam wrestlers, Jan. 7, Heber City, Utah.
