Aug 03 FLASH: No U.S. medals on day one of Pytlasinski International in Poland

WARSAW, Poland -- Four U.S. wrestlers competed on the first day of the respected Pytlasinski Memorial International on Saturday, with none of the athletes reaching a medal match. Three of the athletes are members of the 2013 U.S. World Team.

Two-time Olympian Spenser Mango (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) opened with a victory by disqualification on cautions over Anar Zeinalov of Estonia. He was edged in the second match by 2011 World silver medalist and 2013 European champion Elbek Tazhyieu of Belarus, 1-2. When Zeinalov failed to reach the finals, Mango was not eligible for repechage.

The other two U.S. World Team members in action, Jordan Holm (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Robbie Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. were defeated in their first match. Neither were eligible for repechage when their opponents did not make the finals.

The other U.S. athlete in action, 2013 U.S. Open champion David Arendt (Camp Lejeune, N.C./U.S. Marines), opened with a victory by injury default, then was beaten in his next match. He also did not qualify for repechage.

Four more U.S. World Team members will be in action on Sunday, after weighing in and receiving draws today. The U.S. will have two entries at 74 kg/163 lbs., with 2013 World Team member Andrew Bisek competing, along with Justin Lester, who is on the World Team at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. but has moved up for this event. The other two World Team members wrestling Sunday are Jesse Thielke at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Caylor Williams at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
